Hi, trying to connect to a new Amazon smart plug with Pixel 3 XL (latest Alexa app). Experience is frustrating and I've failed to connect so far. When I try to scan the barcode in the back, I receive an Unknown failure issue. I try to sync with my device (And yes I've held the button and ensured that red and blue are alternatively blinking. Sometimes I am able to connect, and I can select a wifi network, but when I try to get the plug to connect to the network I receive a "Unable to complete setup. Please try again" error. (To Amazon): This is a really frustrating and inconsistent user experience. I can't find a good way to get support besides chatting or calling, but I think email support should also be an option. My time is limited and I prefer asynchronous communication. (To everyone): Please help.

My normal advice would be to make certain your phone is connected to the 2.4 GHz band on your router during setup, but if you are able to connect to the plug at any point, it would appear you already are.
If your router is using band steering and a single SSID for both bands, it may be necessary to temporarily disable the 5 GHz radio on your router for the duration of the setup.
This is exactly the same problem I had, my Mum and Dad have got Smart Plugs by another maker, I can’t remember who but I decided to purchase an Amazon Smart Plug for my Dad’s lamp.
I plugged it in and tried to set it up via the Alexa App on my Mum’s phone but had exactly the same problem, her Echo is in the lounge and she has an Android phone which she got on a contract I think in December 2018.
I was was hoping that Mum would be able to get Dad’s lamp controlled via her Echo, but seeing as I had the same problem as you, I tried via my Dad’s phone.
Guess what?, Result, it worked without a problem. The problem is now that in order to get his lamp turned on and off he has to use his phone.
Very sadly I am unable to set the plug up on via the App on Mum’s phone as it searches but of course the Smart Plug is already set up.
For some strange reason, over Christmas I purchased a Phillips Hue lighting system for Mum and Dad and managed to get it set up not only by having downloaded the Phillips Hue App on both my Mum and Dad’s phones but also setting up via the Alexa App on both my Mum and Dad’s phones.
If only there was some way to get the Amazon Smart Plug set up via the Alexa App on my Mum’s phone it would be good.
