Bought an Amazon Smart Plug - followed the instructions, paired the device, etc. Received the message that all was good and could now use. Unfortunately Alexa does not recognize the device. I have rebooted the plug, started again and again. No errors when setting up but when I ask Alexa to turn on the light she cannot find the device. When i open the Alexa app i see the message "Server is Unresponsive" and when i click on the device the message is :waiting for Amazon..." and then i get the message "Device is Unresponsive" - The message then changes back to "server is unresponsive" after a minute. We have other plugs by Wemo that we have set up without an issue. Thought that would be the same with Amazon's smart plug. My app is up-to-date - everything is on 2.4gh network. I have opened the App on both my iPhone and iPad with the same results. Turned everything on and off - not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.
I am having a similar issue. I can get my plugs setup and they work for a few hours, then I start to get the device is unresponsive error. also if I setup one, then try and move it to another outlet (like the one immediately above/below the current one) the device is again unresponsive from the Alexa app on my phone. However, I looked up the devices in my router (MAC address starts with 3c:5c:c4) and I am able to ping them from my laptop even though Alexa app is unable to get a response. All of my other smart home devices (dots, taps wink hub, harmony hub, random smart outlet, garage door opener) have no issues. No client issues for laptops, desktops, phones, tablets, ip cameras, media players (roku, firetv, shield). not a signal issue as I have two ubquiti unifi ac-pro access points. the echo dot I have in the living is farther away from the access point than any other device with zero connectivity issues.
edit: I had previously attempted setting a static reservation in my DHCP settings, but that did not seem to make a difference. so did some further troubleshooting by connecting the smart plug to the hotspot on my phone. was able to setup, unplug/replug the outlet, and still have connectivity. went back to my DHCP reservation settings and overrode the DNS settings (I run a pihole for network wide adblocking) to use the DNS setting for that VLAN instead of crossing VLANs to the pihole. this seems to have resolved the issue and now the smart plug survives losing power.
I would like to point out to Amazon Support that I find it odd that the MAC address is not printed on the box or the device itself. I would have assumed this was some sort of FCC regulatory item and is also helpful for network troubleshooting.
I get error "provisioning Failure" on both smart plugs...
Okay! In your case this is a different issue! Sorry :( But it is a known issue that they are working to get resolved as soon as possible! They do suggest trying to change the time on your smart phone to 24 hr time and then trying to set up the device - once setup you can change it back to 12hr. If you can try that and let me know please!
I had a very frustrating evening in my home office trying to get my Smart Plug to respond to my command "Turn on Plug" through my Echo Dot to be able to control my Christmas tree lights. I researched and viewed many blogs and youtube help videos with no luck. After reinstalling several times, I knew my Amazon app and plug were talking to each other because I could manually turn the plug on and off by pressing the app buttons, but the voice commands were not working. All Alexa would say was "Sorry, I didn't find a device named PLUG". After many agonizing hours, I gave up and went to my living room where I have an Echo Plus. I gave one last attempt using my Echo Plus "Alexa, turn on Plug" and the response was "OK!" Wow, it really works with voice commands.
So I decided the Smart Plug only works with the Echo Plus and not with the Echo Dot? That can't be right. I never had an issue like this before and no one ever posted something like that before. So here's how I solved my problem.
I forgot to say 3 magic words. "Alexa, Change Account". (We have 2 accounts, mine and my wife's)
Now if I can just figure out how to get Alexa to respond to "Turn on Christmas Tree" instead of "Turn on Plug"? Any help with this would be appreciated.
Pmorel hi. You need to go into the Alexa app. ALL DEVICES click on the device named "Plug" go to 3 dots in upper right corner then click on "edit name" and type in Christmas tree.
I did exactly as you described and the name is changed in my phone Amazon Alexa app to "Christmas Tree" however Alexa only responds to "Alexa, turn on PLUG" she says "Christmas Tree doesn't support that". What am I missing here?
