I bought 2 Kindle HD Kids Editions for my 2 kids. I have them set up so each only shows one child. The problem is that for some reason, at the top left, it will say something like, "Adam's 3rd Fire" on one and "Eve's 3rd Fire" on the other (no, those are not their real names). When I use the "Manage Your Kindle" page, I can set the name that shows when I am logged on, but not when my children are logged on. At one point it had said "Adam's Fire" and "Eve's Fire." I think that when I changed some settings or during an update or two, they got re-registered as new Kindles and eventually became their "3rd" Kindle Fire.
Hi there - If you edit the device name, it will change the name displayed on the Kindle. To edit the device name: 1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices 2. From Your Devices, select the Fire or Kindle device or Kindle reading app you'd like to edit the name of. 3. Select Edit next to the name of the device or Kindle reading app. 4. Enter the desired name and click Save. Let us know if this helps.
Thanks, but as I said, this will set the name when I am logged on, not when my children are logged on. For example, I have one device named, "Kids' Kindle Blue." When I log onto the device, it says, "Kids Kindle Blue" at the top left. If I have "Adam" log onto the same device, it says, "Adam's 3rd Fire" at the top left. "Adam" is a child's profile in the FreeTime program.
Thanks, but this lets you change the child's name, not the device's name. I can change "Adam" to "Steve", but then it'll say, "Steve's 3rd Fire." I want it to say, "Adam's Fire" like it originally did. I have 2 of them, so originally, one would say, "Adam's Fire" if Adam was logged in and "Eve's 2nd Fire" if Eve was logged in. The other would say, "Eve's Fire" if Eve was logged in and "Adam's 2nd Fire" if Adam was logged in. After a system update, it seems to have registered as "new" devices for their profiles, so now it is their "3rd" and "4th" Fires.
This is the same thing Amber H. said, and my response is still the same. It sets the name of the device (at the top left) when I am logged on to it, but not when my child is logged onto the same device.
A child's FreeTime profile is, in a sense, considered as a device of it's very own, so when the FreeTime app is opened and a child's profile selected, it changes the "device name" in the top left corner to indicate that. If the child has an actual Kindle of their own, if you don't want the "device name" to change when the FreeTime app is being used, the device name and the title of the child's profile needs to be the same thing. Otherwise, if say your personal Kindle is named "Prime Member 150303", when your child uses their profile, it is no longer your Kindle, but instead it's the Kindle of "Profile title for the child of Prime Member 150303" ETA: It's akin to a PC having an administrator sign in an a different sign in for any other user for that PC. Each user basically has their own "computer within a computer" (if that makes sense).
I have this same issue but it isn't consistent. I have one Fire HD 6 that shows the child's name correctly when not in FreeTime (Bob's Kindle) but when inside FreeTime I see Bob's 3rd Kindle. Device name is Bob's Kindle. I have the exact same Fire HD 6 (ordered at the same time) that shows Mary's Kindle both outside FreeTime and when in FreeTime. This must be a bug.
I have the same problem. And can find no way to change it. You can set the device name as described, either from the device or from the amazon account) and that shows while in the adult profile. But when you go into Freetime, which is what the child will see, it picks up the name given to the child profile, not the device name, and then appends 2nd Fire, 3rd Fire, 4th Fire... I guess forever. My first device was the prior generation Fire HD 7, and it says "Grandchildren's Fire"... the profile name was Grandchildren as they shared it, so it took me a while to figure out how this works. Which is plain dumb. It is not Jane's 4th Fire. And she calls it a Kindle. I hope Amazon fixes this, and let's us name it what works for the child.
I had this exact problem as well. We accidentally set up our daughter's Fire with our son's name. But, I figured out how to edit it! Solution: 1. Install "Easy Go" app on the tablet: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P52A3YQ?keywords=system shortcut&qid=1451168349&ref_=sr_1_3&s=mobile-apps&sr=1-3 2. Go in to parental controls and enable the app for your child's profile 3. Log in as the child on the tablet 4. Run the "Easy Go" app (it will probably download it again) 5. Click the "Settings" shortcut icon inside the application. (you will now be in the settings as your child's profile) 6. Go to "Device Options" 7. Tap "Change Device Name" 8. Rename and save. Enjoy! 9. Go back in to parental controls to remove the app from your kid's profile so they don't change settings.
MMM's solution with Easy Go worked for me. A couple notes: I think the device names need to be unique across all devices in your Amazon account, so if you name the device "John's Fire" in the main, parent profile, you can't name it "John's Fire" in the child profile. Also, after saving the new name I had to reboot the tablet for the change to take effect. I'm quite convinced that this is a bug/limitation of the Freetime software, and while it's mostly cosmetic Amazon should really fix it.
Hi Rebecca Lowell- I'm sorry you're experiencing problems with your Kindle's name as well. CatChat and many others have provided steps that worked for them on their devices on this thread. If none of this has worked for you, our Support team is happy to help you here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/contact-us/kindle-help.html Thanks for posting!
I don't want to download an app to change something that is a bug on the Kindle Fire. I acknowledge that bugs happen. I've tried changing via Settings and Device Options, I've tried to change via my Amazon account on my computer. Nothing changes it. I did de-register and wipe the device recently because it stopped recognizing passwords. I suppose that could have made it see this as a "2nd" device. But since it reads the serial number and has that on file, there shouldn't be any question that it is in fact the same Kindle Fire I bought a few weeks ago. Even now, I'm looking at it after having set up parental controls after the de-register/re-register and it says I haven't set them up. There seems to be very bad tracking for what has been set and what hasn't. Either too little or too much. I had some similar issues with my own Kindle which cleared after re-registering. I figured that might help on this device too, but it hasn't.
