The original Kindle did not require a wi-fi connection. Was that a free 3g wi-fi provided by Amazon? I want to buy a Kindle for an elderly relative that does not have a cell phone or wi-fi. The original allowed me to download books no matter where we might be. Some of the world lives where the technology is not up to date.
Be sure to check cell signal availability in the location where it's going to be used. There also used to be a limitation on larger books and they had to be downloaded by wifi, no idea if that still exists.
NOTE: I do NOT speak for or represent Amazon in any fashion. This is a customer to customer forum.
