Mine is a Kindle 8th Generation. This is the lightweight with the touch screen, and is the one I use the most. 4.5 x 6.375 inches I too had my library disappear. When I'd scan the list of books in my library, I'd get the first 7 books listed, then 40 pages of blanks. I solved the problem this way:
First, I did these commands on my Ubuntu/Linux laptop, after attaching the kindle to it via USB, and I could see all of my 300-plus books
that were on my Kindle. So then I did this:
mkdir ~/doc/Kindle cd ~/doc/Kindle/ cp -R /media/smitty/Kindle/documents/ documents
Then I detached the Kindle from my laptop, went into settings on the Kindle and did a "Reset to factory settings." This of course wiped out all of the books in my library. Then I activated WiFi on the Kindle (you have no choice after the reset) and re-registred with Amazon (id, password, yada yada). Then I put the Kindle in Airplane Mode, re-attached the Kindle to my laptop and did this:
cd /media/smitty/Kindle/ (cd ~/doc/Kindle/; tar czf - documents) | tar xzvf -
And then I had all my books back in my library on the Kindle. The only annoyance is that now as I scan through my books it wants to display a graphic of the cover, when I'd prefer just an alphanumeric list of books, but I can live with that.
BUT I'M FED UP WITH AMAZON MESSING WITH MY KINDLE WITHOUT MY CONSENT! IT'LL BE A COLD DAY IN HELL BEFORE I EVER ATTACH MY KINDLE VIA WIFI. FROM NOW ON IT'LL ONLY CONNECT INDIRECTLY VIA USB!
if you poke around in the options on your Home page, you'll notice that under the middle option (usually shows Books or All Items) there's an option to show Grid (covers) or List.
And I can see all 1629 Items on my account by switching to:
All (highlighted) | Downloaded ___ All Items ___ Title or Recent or Author
and tapping on the 1 of 243 in the lower right of my Home page where I have the following options:
Sort = Recent --> Page Number (1 to 243) or Titles starting with blank box to enter text
Sort = Title --> Page Number (1 to 243) or Titles starting with blank box to enter text
Sort = Author --> Page Number (1 to 243) or Authors starting with blank box to enter text
The covers only seem to download over wifi, so you will want to use a list view. Also, it can take longer to load a page when Grid view is selected. You might find that you have absolutely no problems if you're set to List view and you can go back to using wifi to download books. There are also some things like xray and "real page numbers" that only seem to download via wifi
