I frequently use Amazon's "whispersync for voice" functionality, buying kindle books and their audible version at the same time and switching back and forth between reading (mostly on my Kindle Oasis, which is the newest model) and listening (mostly in the Audible app on my phone, although I sometimes use the built-in functionality on the Kindle as well).
This works fine, but lately the kindle and audible versions won't "combine" on my Kindle. When I open my library on my phone, the books still appear as normal: only once, with a little headphone icon in the upper right corner indicating that I own the audible version as well and whispersync for voice is available. But on my Kindle, both versions appear separately, as if there's no link between both versions (like when you buy kindle and audible versions of the same book without whispersync for voice being available). However, the kindle ebook will still suggest to go to the furthest location I listened to in the audible app and vice versa, so whispersync is available and working fine.
This has only been happening for the last couple of weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this (or where I could find more expert help if necessary)?
Are you syncing your Kindles, Kindle books, and Audible apps at the end and beginning of every session, to properly save your spot? In many cases, you need to properly close out the book first, then sync (to close out the book, bring up the book menu - usually by tapping the top of the screen - and selecting the Kindle/Kindle-app Home Page icon - do not use the device back button when doing this with a Kindle app).
Sometimes it takes up to 3 syncs at the beginning of a reading session to get all the saved book data/progress from your account.
Since Immersion Reading (reading to the Kindle book at the same time you listen to the audiobook) is not available on the Kindle ereader then you probably won't see the headphones icon on that device (I don't have an Oasis, YET, so I could be wrong on that).

Audio was a new feature for this generation of the Oasis, I think. In any case it's been working fine for months: I used to see the headphone icon on the text ebook on my Oasis just the same as in the Kindle app on my phone, and could switch to listening from within the book. And I can still do that for older books, but for books bought in the last couple of weeks, the audible book is shown separately on the Oasis (but not in the Kindle app on my phone).
Otherwise, there's no problem with sync: the book picks up where I left off no matter what device I'm on, phone or Oasis, and whether I'm listening or reading.
Might just be a weird glitch, and as the feature itself works, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Try rebooting the Kindle to see if that fixes things: While unplugged, hold the power button down for a full (time it out) 20 seconds, ignoring any message or device action. Upon releasing the power button, it should finish rebooting on its own.
You can send Amazon feedback on the glitch by emailing kindle-feedback@amazon.com or contact Amazon customer service for troubleshooting or if you want them to open a ticket on the issue (Help>>Need More Help?>>Contact Us - Select the phone or chat option for best results, only use email for feedback)

Just an update for anyone who is experiencing the same problem: I ended up contacting Amazon about it, and with their help I deregistered my device and re-registered it to my account, which solved the problem.
That's great to hear your Kindle is working as expected again. Thanks for also posting back with what ended up working for you to fix the glitch.
It helps both those who may see your thread when researching the same issue, and also for regular volunteers here, so we can help others if they post the same thing without searching the forum first.

I have exactly the same issue, and unfortunately deregistering/reregistering makes no difference.
Amazon Kindle support cannot help either at the moment, so stuck with whispersync for voice not working at all on any of my books.
Latest software also fails to automatically download, no help from support for nearly 2 weeks on this either.

You might want to do what a lot of us do: manually download and install the software. I'm a soon to be retired, 67 year old woman and I've done it on my devices. It's easier than waiting to have it download whenever Amazon sends out a batch (they do not send them all out at the same time to all devices - it can take weeks for all devices to update)
Also, the whisprsync for voice and the audiobook have to be for the exact same version. In my case this won't work because a lot of my books are UK published books but the audiobooks are US published books

I have had my Oasis exactly three weeks today. It did its initial OS update when it first connected online and I hit sync. Soon after a new update became available, it's not a major update, and that update has yet to be downloaded to my Kindle (seems I am always last to get any update from Amazon, lol). That being said, I have no problem with with books with Whispersync for Voice syncing with their Audible counterparts.

Thanks for the advice, several of my books synced perfectly up until I was asked by Amazon to try a reset as they are trying to find out why my Iasis is not being updated and appears from their end that it is on the latest software and acknowledge it isn’t.
After the reset, nothing I do will sync the ebook and audible version together. Tried deregistering, and downloading a new book that has and audible version, both download, but never combine.
Works perfectly for these books on the MiOad and iPhone Kindle versions.
All very frustrating as Amazon support have been investigating for a while with no resolution.

There's no need for a reset - you could have just updated your device manually. It can take several weeks for every single device around the world to get the latest update as Amazon sends them out in batches
I raised a case case as it has never done an automatic firmware upgrade since purchased, which was very soon after launch.
Unless you keep your wifi on at all times and in Sleep Mode when not in use (especially when waiting for an update and whenever your "turn in line" comes up), then you won't receive automatic updates. If you do keep wifi on and the device in Sleep Mode at night (which is when Amazon send out the device updates), if your Kindle just happened to be off on the one night Amazon sent out the update for the batch your Kindle is in (aka "turn in line"), then you would have missed the update and still needed to manually update it (for example you didn't pay attention to the battery and it shut off due to lack of power till the next time you charged it).

The strange part is Amazon Support say when checking my Kindle from their side, that the system indicates that there is no firmware upgrade available, which they acknowledge is incorrect.
Any my help in getting whidpersync for voice working would be appreciated. As mentioned. the Kindle app for iPad and iPhone both work perfectly with supported books.

So, even with the manual updates, the device isn't saving your place between going back and forth between the Kindle version and the Audible version? Normally you don't have to do this when using both versions on the same device, but, are you properly closing out your books when finished with a reading/listening session in order to properly save your place (see my post on that regard...[to finish what I was saying]....in post #2 above)?
Try that, now that your device is (hopefully) updated - use the book menu and select the "home" icon to return to the Kindle home page and close out the book - again, as mentioned above, do not return to the Home page via Back Button.
Just to check, you are asking about Whispersync for Voice (saving your place between going back and forth between the Kindle and audiobook versions), and not confusing it with Immersion Reading (reading the Kindle book and listening to the audiobook at the same time - Kindle ereaders can't do Immersion Reading)?
edited to finish the reply - for some reason it started to post in mid typing - weird.
Update appears successful as the new option of ‘Return to Kindle Unlimited’ is available.
Yes, saving my place between reading/listening.
Tried using the home button, but makes no difference, the two versions do not sync.
The two versions used to appear as a single book, with a headphone icon at the bottom to switch between the two versions.
When reading/listening on my iPhone in immersion reading, syncing and then switching to my Kindle, the two versions are synced to the same place, but not when only using the Kindle.
My FIRE 8HD suddenly began suffering with this issue, even after all these many moons since the original post. I can add that along with the symptoms already mentioned, in my Kindle books, instead of the PLAY icon that I frequently used, there is now the offer to download the Audible version of that book. I already have the Audible version on the same device on which IMMERSION READING worked perfectly right up to the time it failed completely.
How's it possible that Amazon has allowed their customers to have such a poor result from their Amazon products for such a long time?

My Kindle was on 5.9.6, so two updates behind.
I raised a case case as it has never done an automatic firmware upgrade since purchased, which was very soon after launch.
The main aim issue is that read and listen (whispersync for voice) stopped working after the reset, and despite upgrading to 5.9.7 no longer works.
Amazon have been unable to suggest a fix.
I gave rave even tried deregistrering and registering to a new user, downloading a supported book, and get the same issue.
I presume that something on the device itself has been corrupted. as the issue is not profile dependent.
