I can't believe I can't find a way to delete books from the reader. Now that the firmware allows bolder font and it'll be comfortable for me to actually read from it, there's no room to add new books, so I need to delete books in order to use it, but apparently it's not as easy as you would think. I have a Paperwhite 2, 6th Generation Kindle, firmware 5.8.11. When I tap and hold on any given book on the device, the only options are "Add To Home", "Add to Collection", "Book Description", and "View on Goodreads". Shouldn't there be a "Remove from device" or something worded similar there?
And even more important, isn't there a way to remove multiple books at once from the device? To do that singly for 600 books means the PW2 will go back in the drawer unused. There must be a way to remove books from the device.
Are you on the All or Downloaded tab on your Home screen? On the Downloaded Home screen you should get a Remove from Device option.
To remove more than one book at a time, you'd need to reset it to factory defaults. That will wipe it clean and you'll need to register it and set it up again. However, 600 books shouldn't have "filled it up".
Unless they are very big -- such as craft books, puzzle books or Dictionaries. Dictionaries are on the order of 25 MB each and some craft and puzzle books can be even larger.

Those 600 plus I was trying to add another batch of books. But I decided to do it the brute force way. I deleted everything from the Documents directory through Windows. Having to do a factory reset to remove all books seems extreme just to remove multiple books, but I'll keep that in mind if I run into any other issues with space. Thanks for the info.

If you "removed" them using Windows, they're not really gone, they're just hidden. They're still taking up space on your device and the only way to remove them now is to do a factory reset.
That is odd then. I wasn't able to add one more book to the reader before deleting the books manually through Windows. After that, I was able to add books, but I only added 26 books at that point, not wanting to wait for the batch I had intended. But in checking the Device Info, it now says 1,284 MB free space available. My PW2 is one with only 2 GB space on it, not 4 GB.
what happens is that you are leaving behind all sorts of auxiliary files plus opening up the possibility of deleting necessary OS files. These can add up after a while. This is why Amazon recommends that you simply reset your device to factory defaults if you have massive numbers of books you want to delete and then you download just the ones you want.
Myself, I only keep books I haven't read plus a few reference books on my device and only keep one of the massive Delphi Collected Works books on my paperwhite (I too have the 2GB one) at a time and that's only if I'm reading it.
At this point you may want to consider resetting it to factory defaults and starting over, as you've got a lot of "junk" on their now that will never go away and may muck things up down the line.
It's not a Windows device so you should never use Windows' file management to do things (Same for a Mac, it's not a Mac device either.)

That means you're looking at the list of all the Books you own, not just those on the device. When you see the option "Add to Home" that's asking you if you want to download the book as it's not on the device. On the Home screen, tap "Downloaded" to see only those books on your Paperwhite.
I'll keep all this in mind if I do decide to do a factory reset. But for now, everything seems to be working perfectly, lots of free space and no problems adding more books. I doubt I'll ever add 600 books to the reader again though, just keep a handful that I'm currently reading or about to read.

unfortunately that does not change the FAT (file allocation table) which will still think that space is filled
