When I attempt to watch a Dolby Vision encoded video from Disney+ (I've tried the Mandalorian and Frozen), I usually get a black screen. I'd say this happens about 90% of the time but occasionally I can get the video to play. The FireTV stick is routed through a Denon AVR-X3400h receiver to a Vizio PQ65-F1 TV. There is no message from the TV that a signal is not present, so it appears that the FireTV stick is putting out a black screen.
I can successfully play Disney+ SDR and HDR10 content, just not Dolby Vision.
I can play Dolby Vision content on the FireTV stick from Netflix and Amazon Video. The problem seems to be the combination of Disney+ and Dolby Vision.
I’m having this exact same problem with the Firestick 4K on a Vizio tv. Unless I restart the Disney+ app or do a force stop on it I can’t see most content. I’ll hear sound, but get no picture just a black screen.
When I restart the app I can see one show one time, but there is a constant color/tint shift that’s very annoying. If I stop the show and watch something else it’s back to the black screen and just sound. It is NOT my tv. I have watched shows via the Disney+ app in our PS4 on the same tv with no problems whatsoever.
I would really prefer to use the Firestick instead of having to fire up the PS4!
I forgot to mention the color shift. I see it occasionally, about every minute or so, and it's just a quick flash. It looks like the image changes color temperature from cool to warm for a split second.
After 2 1/2 hours on hold I spoke to Disney+ technical support yesterday. The representative admitted that there are known issues with Disney+ on the FireTV stick 4K. She was just a first level support so I don't know how connected she is, but she did claim they are working on it. I guess all we can do at this time is hope they find a solution. I was planning on bingeing Star Wars in DV UHD over the Thanksgiving break. Hope they get it fixed before then.
I gave up after being on hold two hours with Disney+. Once I deduced that it was only happening on the Firestick 4K I figured it was an Amazon issue to fix. Regardless of who’s issue it is I really hope they fix it soon as well.
And yes the color shifts are exactly as you describe - going from warm browns to cool blues, etc. But for me it seems to happen every few seconds.
It is all over the internet that disney is having some growing pains--that is why the 2 hour wait on phone . Just wait a week and hopefully they will have the kinks worked out. Since it is disneys app and disneys content they have to get it together and make sure it works on all devices.
I am so glad I found this topic on here, my wife and I have been having this problem (specifically the color shift issue) and this has helped tremendously. I found this link - https://support.caavo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021523311-I-am-Getting-a-Pink-Screen-on-my-Fire-TV-4K - and followed the instructions to change two settings. One thing I noticed is that my 4K stick was only set at 1080 resolution with the Always HDR setting turned on. I flipped it to 2160 resolution and changed the “Dynamic Range Settings” to Adaptive and it has corrected the issue.
I finally resolved my Disney+ issues. I performed a number of actions trying to find a solution and I suspect the that the real problem was specifically related to the Vizio, but I'll post all of my changes in case they help someone else.
First, I updated the firmware on my FireTV stick 4K. The FireTV stick reported the latest firmware version, but a check for firmware update returned that an update was available so I installed that. After the firmware update I uninstalled Disney+ and then reinstalled, as suggested by Disney+ support. I doubt either of these were the real solution, but I did them anyway just in case.
In addition to the problems with Disney+, I discovered other playback issues after recently updating the firmware on my PQ65. Specifically playing Dolby Vision content from Netflix was resolution limited to 1080p, and Jack Ryan season 1 was no longer available in Dolby Vision.
After updating firmware to 184.108.40.206 I performed a factory reset. This is my SOP after a firmware update in anticipation of running a calibration. As part of my factory reset procedure, I cycle through all of the inputs, enable Full UHD color and hide the unused inputs (HDMI 2-HDMI 5).
After discovering the problems with Netflix and Jack Ryan I knew there was something else going on and that's when it hit me that UHD HDR content would me limited if Full UHD color was not turned on. I checked the settings for HDMI 1 and sure enough I'd forgotten to turn Full UHD color ON in my rush to update the firmware. I turned Full UHD color ON for HDMI 1 and lo and behold all of my previous problems were gone. Dinsey+ plays in full Dolby Vision glory with no color shifts, Netflix and Prime Video as well. I'd love to talk to a Vizio engineer to understand why Full UHD color is OFF by default. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's made this mistake.
All the same issues over here with a fairly new Sony TV. I've experimented with Disney+ through other smart TV devices and none of these issues are present. It's a core Amazon Fire Stick/Disney+ issue in this case, in my opinion. I'm not sure who to blame more, but both should have plenty of incentive to fix it soon, as monthly Disney+ subscriptions will not be renewed by Fire Stick users and/or people will invest in smartTV devices other than Fire Sticks. I would think two of the world's largest companies can figure this out fairly soon. I will try the solutions I've seen here and on a Reddit forum in the mean time. My question is: if I switch Fire Stick resolution manually to 2160 is that short of 4K and will that also then ensure that none of my Amazon Prime shows, for example, are no longer presented in full 4K? I don't want cause other problems on other streaming services that weren't already there by trying to solve the Disney+ problem. Thanks everyone.

Chris, 2160 is 4K (3840x2160), so you should be good to go there.
Thanks for the post. Just got a Vizio P65X and had the same issues. Just like your final step, I found that the input was not enabled for Full UHD Color. Once I flipped that everything looked better across the board and D+ content started working. I was almost ready to return the tv as the content looked bad. For comparison, our LG E8 just worked without all the fuss.
FYI HDR10 and Dolby Vision are not the same thing. HDR10 is the most common form of HDR and is public domain meaning it is free. Dolby Vision is owned by Dolby and it's a superior form of HDR then HDR10. Think whole movie average HDR for HDR10 while Dolby Vision is more accurate Scene-by-Scene or frame. So if you say Jack Ryan works with Dolby Vision you're incorrect sorry but Jack Ryan is HDR10 or HDR10+. Prime doesn't offer any programming and Dolby Vision. Just saying.
I have exactly the same TV you you do and I've had zero problems with HDR10 provided that the HDMI port is set to full hd color and resolution on the fire TV 4K is forced to 2160 at 60 Hz. Auto used to work but doesn't work anymore it defaults to 1080p. This behavior started over the weekend. Disney+ with the Fire TV forced to 2160 plays videos in 4k and HDR10 only. I can confirm the problem exists with the Fire TV cube Gen 2 as well. I'm leaning toward the fire TV as the root cause because I started noticing Auto no longer worked over the weekend and I had not installed Disney+
According to Fire TV I'm running the latest firmware no updates available, Vizio tells me I have no updates available even after the hard reset, my Onkyo tx-nr777 also has the latest firmware and its HDMI ports are set to hdcp 2.2 and pass through. My monoprice HDMI cables are htcp certified and guaranteed to run at 8k they are new not that it should make any difference.
So for me unfortunately the problem persists I'm not willing to settle for just HDR10 when I viewed programming in Dolby Vision before.
Interesting that Dolby's Vision page lists Jack Ryan as Dolby Vision but the native Amazon Prime app on my Vizio PQ65-F1 shows it as HDR10+ only. Anyway I'll amend my comment above and say most but not all content on Prime with HDR is HDR10. Anyway I started a new thread as the problem with Dolby vision is hardware related to the Fire TV platform and not to a specific app or program.
@hogcaller and @AfterShock thanks very much for your posts. Now I can watch Disney without needing to rely on my PS4! I tried both of your solutions and they both worked for me. In the end I just changed the input settings to Full UHD color for the input I was using and it worked on my Visio TV. The color and brightness looked much better this way too! Before I read your solutions i had contacted Amazon and the troubleshooting steps got me nowhere actually, they were as follows, these may work for others but not for my Visio.
"Please try to perform this troubleshooting with your Fire TV stick.
-Install all available software updates.
-Make sure fire stick is near the router (suggested is 10 feet away from the router)
-Use the HDMI extender of the fire stick or Remove the extender if you're is already using it.
