Same issues as users Kliff and ad_85. When trying to setup my Home Theater group for two 3rd gen Echo Dots, one is able to be selected and the other is greyed out with the error message “Already in Speaker set.” I did previously have multi-room music groups. But I deleted those and still receive the error when attempting to set up Home Theater group.
1) open Alexa app 2) go to settings 3) under 'Alexa preferences', go to 'TV & video' 4) press 'Fire TV' 5) press 'manage devices' 6) press 'Un-link devices' under relevant echos After that, user should go back and try to create the Home Theater cluster.
No idea why it had decided to link the echoes In the first place but it worked perfectly for me after that!
I have 2 echo studios and an echo sub and a fire TV cube. I can not set them up as a home theater set as 1 of the speakers is always greyed out and saying incompatible. I have spent a lot of money on this and am very disapointed with the support being offered.
Fixed it by updating fire cube. Why this has to be so difficult I do not know.
I have successfully setup the home theater in 2.1 mode. My problem now is volume control, trying to use my harmony hub but it won't allow me to add echo as volume control device/method. Maybe it's just not possible yet because this is so new? So is only method for volume control now either through voice control or new amazon remotes with volume control paired with home theater compatible amazon device?
Ad_85 , thanks for the heads up. Spent days trying to sort out home theater but only one echo was available and the other other was greyed out ( already in a speaker set).
Depending on your TV, you should be able to access some kind of audio preference in the settings and change to TV only for audio. Then back to BT or Alexa later.
This is assuming you do not use an AVR. If you have it hooked up to an AVR or sound bar, then the advice is too complex to go into here. Whip out the manuals for whatever set up you use and see the best way to switch back and fourth.
Honestly, TV speakers suck. It sounds like you do not have an AVR (receiver with speakers) or sound bar. It is worth it to get a sound bar with Alexa (if you want). The end. Way better sound and no need for this switching. Yamaha and Sonos make high rated low end to high end sound bars. Amazon sells em all but, you might visit a store to see how big they are or what they look like.
Just purchased the sub bundle (in the mail). Do I loose any functionality by setting up home theater with the bundle. Would still like to use the speakers for streaming.
How to you turn off home theater if you just want the sound to come through your tv....
When watching YouTube i dint want the sound through the echos just the tv... but only way i csn see to do it is by unlinking the decices
Welcome to the forum, Jamin40!
By enabling Gaming Audio, you can send the audio through your TV speakers only. Go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Home Theater System, and then select Gaming Audio. When you're ready to return to your Home Theater, toggle Gaming Audio off.
I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any more questions

I could hug you for this!!!!
I was on chat with Customer Support for over an hour and they did not have a clue how to resolve this, followed this post and waheeey!!! it solved the greyed out speaker group issue. This solution needs highlighting!
Can a Echo be used as an additional speaker in conjunction with sound coming from the existing TV/Stereo Receiver speakers? I want the sound to come from both at the same time.

My setup is working but if I turn off the tv, it pauses the video on the firetv and so I cant just listen to the audio. I have turned of hdmi-cec but still happens. Any advice?
Why is this not available for Fire TV Edition TVs? All Fire TV devices should have the same features.
I am also very dissapointed to hear this. I just bought a Fire Edition TV thinking I'd be able to buy a couple Amazon Studios and use them for speakers. I'm really dissapointed that it appears I made a poor choice in buying a Fire Edition TV as it seems Amazon is not supporting them with the latest features. I am going to be really annoyed if I end up having to buy a Firestick 4K to plug into my brand new TV that I specifically bought because it already had the Fire TV OS built into it.

I just got an echo studio and fire tv stick 4K. When I try creating the home theater on Alexa app, I can’t get the option for it. I can add a pair or multi room, but no option for new system or home theater. Everything is updated. I tried restarting everything. Still no option.

Anyone else experience this too? How to fix it?
Try Reinstalling the App. Because It supports...
So amazon got back to me with this:
1) open Alexa app
2) go to settings
3) under 'Alexa preferences', go to 'TV & video'
4) press 'Fire TV'
5) press 'manage devices'
6) press 'Un-link devices' under relevant echos After that, user should go back and try to create the Home Theater cluster.

I like the Sonos Beam or the Yamaha YAS 207.
Let me understand the home theater setup only works with firesticks and cubes?

No, it's either/or there.

According to this: https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tv/handling-hdmi-events.html apps should continue if a bluetooth audio device is connected, which it does. Surely they should continue to play also if it's connected to a home theatre setup too?
