New fire tv cube owner, pre-ordered the second gen when I saw the specs and that it supported Dolby Vision.
Just spent the past few hours trying to get it to work properly with my LG 86UH9500 4K UHD TV which has HDCP 2.2 & Dobly Vision HDR, and here is what I have concluded:
1. Dolby Vision only works on HD (1080p) resolution.
2. Video Resolution Auto only switches from HD to 4K with Prime app only - Netflix and Movies Anywhere apps remain in HD. To get 4K support for Netflix and Movies Anywhere I have to lock the resolution to 2160p, but this disables Dolby Vision HDR and only displays HDR picture mode.
3. Movies Anywhere audio only outputs dolby pro logic II sound; switching from Best Available to always DD plus or always DD makes no change.
I was impressed when the cube set itself up automatically when first connected and powered on (I'm assuming it can interconnect with our Echo's over wifi), no interaction was needed on my end.
For whatever reason, the cube defaulted to 1080p video resolution, which locks everything to HD. Interestingly, this is the only time Dolby Vision HDR worked, and it worked with all content (including prime content that only supports HDR). Even the cube's menu used Dolby Vision HDR.
Changing video resolution to auto enabled Prime to switch to 4K resolution and use the correct HDR color, but Netflix and Movies Anywhere remained in HD (Movies Anywhere actually displayed a "This device does not support 4K playback" message under 4K content, just like when video was locked to 1080p).
I am hoping this can be fixed, as I purchased primarily for its availability of apps and Dolby Vision support. LG has tended to push IP TV with its WebOS and has a very, very basic selection of apps, which is why the cube seemed to be perfect.
I've posted details of my testing below in hopes that it helps determine what the issue might be and how to fix it:
Default cube auto setup (1st time out of the box and connected), cube connected directly to HDMI port on LG TV which has ULTRA HD Deep Color enabled:
video resolution - 1080p 60 hz - locked ??? frame rate - off color depth - 8 bits color format - auto calibrate - no scale dynamic range - always hdr
surround sound - best available
Fire TV interface - 1080p, dolby vison HDR
Tested 4K content - Prime - Carnival Row, plays 1080p, dolby vison HDR (SHOULD BE HDR), dolby digital sound Netflix - El Camino, plays 1080p, dolby vison HDR, dolby digital sound Movies Anywhere - "This device does not support 4K playback" displays under all 4K titles Aladdin (2019) plays 1080p, dolby vison HDR, dolby pro logic II sound ??? why?
2 changes:
video resolution - Auto (up to 4K Ultra HD) color depth - 10 bits (LG 86UH9500 supports this)
Fire TV interface - 1080p, dolby vison HDR
Tested 4K content - Prime - Carnival Row, plays 2160p, HDR picture, dolby digital sound Netflix - El Camino - plays 1080p (NOT SWITCHING to 4K), dolby vison HDR, dolby digital sound Lucifer - (season 4) plays 1080p (NOT SWITCHING to 4K), dolby vison HDR, dolby digital sound Lost in Space (2018) - plays 1080p (NOT SWITCHING to 4K), dolby vison HDR, dolby digital sound Movies Anywhere - "This device does not support 4K playback" displays under all 4K titles Aladdin (2019) plays 1080p, dolby vison HDR, dolby pro logic II sound ??? why? Shazam! - plays 1080p, dolby vison HDR, dolby pro logic II sound ??? why?
1 change:
video resolution - 2160p 60Hz
Fire TV interface - 21060p, HDR picture
Prime - Carnival Row, plays 2160p, HDR picture, dolby digital sound Netflix - El Camino - plays 2160p, HDR picture (NOT DOLBY vision), dolby digital sound Lucifer - (season 4) plays 2160p, HDR picture (NOT DOLBY vision ), dolby digital sound Lost in Space (2018) - plays 2160p, HDR picture (NOT DOLBY vision), dolby digital sound
Also, the Ethernet USB dongle is horrible: to rule out any of these issues being due to wifi, I attached the USB Ethernet dongle (I had planned to do this anyway) and connected to my LAN.
The LAN performance is actually worse than the wifi connection, which just blows my mind. Why an Ethernet port wasn't built into the cube is beyond me.
Not only can't I get HD quality when streaming, but it drops down to HD, sometimes showing HD 1080p (I was watching 4K Prime content). Not only that, but I just got a buffering on the screen, and now a message saying "Slow Internet Connection".
This is on a Gigabit LAN, CAT 6/7 mixed cables, with Fios Gigabit service.
hi got a fire tv cube in the UK all is super fine until cube goes into sleep/powers off etc then when you go back to the cube it defaults to 1080p resolution all the time so have to re apply the settings to auto/resolution 2610p etc had other fire tv 4k sticks never any issues been to amazon tech usual response from techy have you got a 4k tv, good hdmi leads, not seen this before, are you sure you trying to watch a 4k programme etc etc good download speeds which are all 100% fine lg oled tv with good hdmi leads when putting back the fire tv 4k stick works in auto and 20160p without defaulting back to 1080p all the time crazy anyone come across this?
Thank you for your efforts to document those issues. My 10 year old Sony can not display more than 1080p so I am not effected yet by the issues you enumerated with my Cube 2.0. I noted that I do have sound from 5 of my speakers on almost every selection and a couple of the shows produce sound on all 7 speakers. I did not use voice commands with my 4k Fire Sticks; however, I am using voice commands to switch among my HDMI device ports on my Onkyo receiver and 7.1 sound system.
It's my understanding that it takes a little while to buffer up to maximum resolution. Have you given it time to buffer when on a setting like BEST AVAILABLE?
"Tested 4K content - Prime - Carnival Row, plays 1080p, dolby vison HDR (SHOULD BE HDR), dolby digital sound"
I am using a TCL TV with my cube and like you I set the dynamic range to Always HDR.When I switch to the Fire Cube the home screen displays, for about 2 seconds,Dolby Vision in the upper right of the screen. The Fire 4k stick I have does the same thing. It looks like the Always HDR setting defaults to Dolby Vision when using a TCL TV.The color settings in my tv confirm that the tv is in Dolby Vision mode. Most of the Prime 4k programs are HDR.What is going on here??
There's a known 4k handshake issue with the v2 cube Steve.
I returned my 1st cube thinking it was faulty, when I got my replacement cube it was exactly the same.
It keeps on blanking as if there was a loose hdmi cable, on and off all the time.
It works just fine if you set it to 1080p.
I also use it with an LG oled tv.
Hopefully it will be fixed in the next firmware update.
I could see this (handshake) causing my issues as well, as the cube never auto switched to 4K when set to do that (except for Prime it seems). What year is your LG? My 86UH9500 is a 2016 model purchased new in 2017.
It was someone from Amazon that told me that they are aware of the problem, so fingers crossed for the next update Steve.
Wish Amazon had told me that, but it wouldn't have made any difference as if it wasn't working out of the box, it was going back, which it has. Did you keep the second cube you received or did you return it as well? I wish there was a firmware log for the device to know when this issue is resolved, I would give it a second chance at some point down the road (provided Disney+ decides to support it with an app).
It's my understanding that it takes a little while to buffer up to maximum resolution. Have you given it time to buffer when on a setting like BEST AVAILABLE?
In 2019, really? Give it time to buffer? That's ridiculous. See my second post. Cube should've had an integrated gigabit port at the minimum.

I could only get Dolby Vision color mode in 1080p, I also leave the Dolby Vision notification on and confirmed the color mode was Dolby Vision while the content played. I am hoping its related to the HDMI handshake issue Wee Bear mentioned, but if you are saying a 4K Fire Stick has the same issue it may be an all around issue with Amazon hardware. Not good.
having been in touch with amazon its pointless they don't understand the issue of the 4k is not auto switching in the fire tv cube (fire tv 4k stick worked fine) starts up as in 1080p all the time so only thing left send it back and get a replacement ! maybe they want you to send them back ? and have a huge collection of used fire tv cubes to admire very day....as i get is: are you trying to watch a 4k movies have you tried a new cable is your connection fast enough blar blar blar
If you have a device, Cube 2.0 or any other, if it does not provide the experience you desire send it back. If the features you want are present enjoy the cube 2.0 as I have. It switches input, turns on devices, and select channels. On my Onkyo AR and sound bar, Sony Blue Ray, my 10 year old Sony Bravio TV my Cube is behaving quite well. I will keep it; however, if it does not work well for you return it and go to other options such as Roku, Sling, Direct TV, Cox, Dish, etc. Amazon help and contact us is the vehicle to use to request new features or to return products.
Having the same issues with the Cube and my E6 OLED. With the Netflix and Disney+ apps, Dolby Vision is only 1080p60, not 4K24 even with match frame rate on. Amazon Prime does switch to 4K/24 for DV. However, when I compare to the Apple TV device, DV on Netflix and Disney, looks just as good compared to the ATV4K. The tv seems to upscale quite nicely.

OK, although you're pretty much stating what is well known to those posting here.
Posting performance deficiencies relative to Amazon's claims is very useful IMHO. It can save potential Cube 2 purchasers or upgraders from the nuisance of purchasing, setting up, then having to return it. They can wait until Amazon corrects the deficiencies.
Just want to add that I have the same issue with Dolby Vision and UHD resolution. Videos only play in 1080p when it has Dolby Vision, but if its standard HDR then it will play in 4K. I actually upgraded my receiver as the TV allowed DB, but the receiver would not. So a bit disappointing that now it can pass DB, but that apps, etc. on the Fire Cube will not pass it in 4k.
I did "chat" with Amazon on this as well, and they did say they have many reports of this issue right now. They collected info such as my TV model, receiver, how its getting power, etc. Hopefully they will get a fix for this quickly.
I "upgraded" my Fire Stick 4K to the Fire Cube 2nd generation recently.
After start up updates, my Harmony remote (paired via Bluetooth) lost complete control of the OK/Select button. In the Photos app for example I can navigate to the app and start it with OK/Select but can't open photos with it. Other times, it will not bring up the on-screen keyboard. When I bring it up with the stock remote, I can select individual letters and numbers with the Harmony remote. Mainly just weird. I've read other reports of this online also. Not an issue with the Fire Stick 4K (also recently updated) and Harmony remote.
For me, the biggest issue is YouTube 4K HDR is not working - videos just stay in SDR and look faded/low contrast. It appears to be the latest version of the app but it's hard to tell with it being Android 9 on the Cube and Android 7 on the stick. I've tried every setting configuration without luck. The Fire Stick 4K never had and still doesn't have this issue. I've read reports of this online also, here I believe.
I took the Cube out of my main setup and but the Stick back in. The Stick does support Dolby Atmos on the 2 titles in Amazon Prime I could find to support it: Jack Rayn and Carnival Row via Dolby Digital Plus. I hope these and the other issues mentioned here are addressed and that I can re-install and use the Cube.

I am also having the same issue with new Gen2 upgraded from Gen1 cube.
It works fine on my TCL 615 for Dolby Vision 4k and HDR.
But on my Vizio 2019 M series it does not show Dolby Vision as an option at all unless... I disable Full UHD on the Vizio input. If I do disable it, then Dolby Vision becomes available only at 1080p. Then does not auto switch back to 4k for HDR countent.
I have tried every possible configuration of settings and nothing works.
Dolby Vision only at 1080 p or 4k HDR. If I wanted that I would have kept my Gen1 cube connected. I tried my 4k fire stick as well on the Vizio and it's working great! So it's not the tv .it's the Gen2 cube AND hownih communicates with the tv. I also put in a ticket today and also heard that it is being reported on LGs and Vizio's.
So hopefully it will get fixed. If not sending back the Gen2 and will just add a 4k stick and echo which controls my Vizio.
The Fire TV 4K is better than I thought with support for Dolby Vision and Atmos. Sure it’s a tad slower than the Cube but without the bugs at this point in time. I have Alexa elsewhere and use a Harmony remote by choice.
