One evening last week my TV started to update, and was still updating when I woke up the next day, almost 12 hours later. The message on the screen said do not unplug the TV during the update. It is on a continuous loop and will not reboot. I contacted the manufacturer, Element Electronics, who took me through the steps of pushing the on/off button on the TV and unplugging, plugging it back, but that did not work I removed the HDMI cable that was not connected. I unplugged the TV overnight and plugged it in this morning and the same thing is happening. Element had their engineering team look into this but they couldn’t figure it out and told me to contact Amazon Support. This tv is just a little over a year old. I really wish there was a way to fix it. It was working perfectly before it asked to update.

Hi Gweaver!
I am so sorry the Fire Tv is doing this! Though it's branded (like the Toshiba one I own) let's try some of the steps below to see if you can't knock it out of that loop it seems stuck in:
Fire TV is Frozen, Blank, or Won’t Power On
If your Fire TV device or remote isn’t responding, follow these troubleshooting steps.
Fire TV Device Isn’t Responding?
If your Fire TV device displays normally but you aren’t able to use any controls, first try troubleshooting the remote. For more information on troubleshooting the remote, go to Can't Pair a Fire TV Remote or Game Controller.
Restart your device. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the device or from the power outlet, and then plug it back in.
You can also use your remote to restart your device. Press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons at the same time, for about five seconds. Or, select Settings > Device > Restart from the Fire TV menu.
Make sure that you are using the power supply provided with your Fire TV device. Connect the included power adapter into the power port on the back of your Fire TV device, then plug the other end into a power outlet.
For Amazon Fire TV (1st and 2nd Generation), make sure that you are using a High Speed HDMI cable, if needed. The cable should say "High Speed", "1.3", or "1.4" on it. Plug one end of your HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of your Amazon Fire TV, then plug the other end into an available HDMI port on your TV. For FIre TV Stick, make sure that you use the included HDMI extender.
If you are using an HDMI hub, disconnect your Fire TV device from the hub and try plugging it directly into the TV.
Try switching to a different HDMI port on your television. Remember which HDMI port you used to connect your Fire TV device and switch to the corresponding input channel on your TV.
Tip:
If your Fire TV device remains on the logo screen during setup, wait at least 10 minutes for the device to finish loading. If your Amazon Fire TV (1st or 2nd Generation) is still slow to start after initial setup, make sure you are using a High Speed HDMI cable.
If your Fire TV device turned off while you were using it or after installing a software update, leave your Fire TV device unplugged until it has cooled down.
Blank Screen?
If you see a blank or black screen, here are some things to try:
Make sure that your TV is on and set to the same HDMI input channel your Fire TV device is connected to.
If you're using an HDMI cable to connect your Fire TV device to your TV, unplug it and then reconnect. You may need to try a different HDMI cable.
Temporarily unplug other devices connected to your TV's HDMI ports.
Try changing your TV to a different resolution (for example, 1080p or 720p). Press the Up and Rewind buttons on your Fire TV remote at the same time for five seconds. The system then cycles through available output resolutions, pausing at each resolution for 10 seconds. If you see the correct resolution on-screen, select Use Current Resolution.
If your Fire TV device is connected to an A/V receiver or sound bar, make sure that the receiver is on and switched to the correct input. If that doesn’t work, try connecting your Fire TV device directly to the television.
Note: When you start or stop streaming a title in 4K Ultra HD your TV screen may flicker or turn black for up to five seconds. For more information, go to Watching Video in 4K Ultra HD on Fire TV.
Let us know if any of these steps get you up and running!

I think we fixed it. You have to unplug the tv, hit the back button and while still holding the back button, plug it back in. Keep holding down the back button until the amazon fire tv logo comes back on.
My 55" Element Fire tv has been doing the same thing since April 13. Same exact scenario. I shut the tv off to go to bed it said there was an uodate available so i clicked update now. That was on Saturday evening, it is now Wednesday evening, and I am still in an update loop! Tv updates, turns off, comes back on to blue screen then right back to "updating" screen I have been on the telephone several times awith both Amazon and Element's technichal engineers. They all say the same script; try unplugging, try hard reset, try rebooting wifi... all of which is impossible it just continues the loop. I have now been relegated to email support who just tol me to try unplugging, and if that doesn't work try the hard reset (holding down the right button and "back" at the same time. I just tried your back button trick praying that it would be that simple for me but, it didn't work for me. Was there anything else that you might have done also that might have led to the fix? My tv is only a little over a year old just like yours... whiwh finally lead element to tell me that it was out of Warranty, and its an Amazon issue, amazon says that even though its a fire tv update, its still on element! Im pullong my hair out! Lol Someone please help!???
If neither Amazon (it *is* out of warranty and they did offer you an extended warranty I will wager) and the TV maker cannot/will not help, what do you think other customers might do?
Consult your state's consumer protection bureau, check with the credit card company you used to buy the device. Some cards offer free extended warranties and "Lemon" protection, Try to find out senior management at the TV maker and reach out to them. (Might need to brush up on your Mandarin) Or even hit up your local news channel's "troubleshooter"/ombudsman.
The Element brand is, to put it politely, not at the premium end of the scale for quality and support. Speaking as a (retired) computer pro, I'd never buy an "all in one" device like that to begin with. A Fire Stick or a Roku or such like dies? You buy a new one for $29 or so.
NOTE: I do NOT speak for or represent Amazon in any fashion. This is a customer to customer forum.

I wanted to leave a note here since so many are still seeking help. My 55" Element got stuck in the update loop like everybody else, and none of the advised solutions worked. What has worked (twice now!) is unplugging the TV, then holding down the leftmost button and plugging it back in. The lesson I've learned is, try every dang possible combination of buttons and plugging the TV back in.
I also read on another forum (I apologize, I forgot which one) that you can download the current firmware on your PC, put it onto a USB key, then plug the USB into your TV and restart it. I have not tried that, but figured I would pass it along.
This now happened to me and my 50” Element tv. It’s on the infamous update loop. Shame to throw it away when’s it’s been great for two years. Will try everything suggested.

This doesn’t work. I think the OS has been wiped out so it’s not recognizing anything we do.

Element and Amazons tech support teams were very courteous and helpful! 👍🏻

Old Tilapia, the leftmost button on the tv or the remote?
