The remote on a FireTV is not intended to operate at another location other than the room where the FireTV is located, as it "talks" to the FireTv device via a WiFi signal directly from the remote to the device, and requires the two to be in range of one another. When you use the App, that is using the WiFi signal coming through your router, within your network, then controlling the device. Why would someone want to be in another room, where you can not see the TV, and try to control the content on it?
I would first try resetting the remote:
To Reset the FireTV Remote, hold the Menu button, Back button and the Left button all at the same time for 10 seconds.
If that does not work, I would perform a factory reset on the FireTV:
Go to Settings; My Fire TV; Reset to Factory Defaults or use the remote to reset it.
A factory reset via the Remote is done by pressing the Select (enter), Right, Back, and Rewind at the same time. Hold for around 15 seconds.
After one of these recent FORCED UPDATES, it makes my back button stop working and I have to reboot it in order to make it work again.
The reply they give you, and people like you, would be comical if it wasn't harming so many people.
I am a programmer and hardware designer. So these people can't just respond to me with their well practiced false arguments.
1ˢᵗ off, Amazon needs to stop illegally updating hardware. I did not ask you to come into my home and modify a device that I own. That is what you are doing. You are giving no notice. Every other company informs you about an update and they also make the customer start the update process. The fact that Amazon hides this, shows malicious intent.
Same issue here. The return button on firetv 1 stops working on the remote and in the firetv app as well. A reboot solves the problem but after a short while it stops working again. I have tried all sorts of things without success. New battaries won‘t solve the issue either.
This must be a firetv software problem as the return button doesn‘t work in the firetv remote app either.
The latest firmware update Fire OS 184.108.40.206 (630508620) didn‘t solve the problem.
I didn‘t try a factory reset as I don‘t want to loose all my settings. Could anyone solve the problem by a factory reset or could help out with another solution?
Is this with a Fire TV stick or the actual Fire TV? First step in Fire TV repair is UNPLUG THE DEVICE. Wait a minute or so and plug it back in. Give it a while to recover. And don't plug a Fire TV device into anything other than power from a wall socket.
Exactly the same problem here. Software version 220.127.116.11 630508620. Back button does not work on remote or android app controller. It used to work fine. Turning box on/off makes the button work again for a few minutes and then it stops working again. Have also tried re-pairing the remote which also makes the back button work for a short while. Can this be looked into and fixed please.
Same here the problem still there. Amazon needs to fix this problem before sales start to slip. Nice device but poor support when there is a problem. Because of this problem not pushing this device on my friends. I tell them to stay away from fire TV and go with another device.
Same issue, I contacted amazon and they said they are not aware of the issue. It makes the fire tv pretty much unusable. I’ve tried everything, dont even brher factoring reseting your device it does nothing, back button will stop working, I’ve been using fire tvs for years so I have a bunch of remotes checked them all, no back button. This is 100% not a hardware issue but a software update issue, I’m at the point if its not fixed with in the next few days I’m buying a nvidia shield, and I highly doubt anything is going to get done, amazon rep told me to factory reset even tho I’ve done it multiple times.
I have discovered something that might help. If you have ES File Explorer installed version 4.xxx uninstall it and restart your Fire unit. That should take care of the problem. Version 4.xxx has a problem with the Fire TV that causes the back button to stop working. You can reinstall ES File Explorer again but try to stick to version 3.xxx and all will be fine. Please let me know if this solution works for you. thank you
As I was going to post a work around, I just read about the possible solution from GFont concerning the ES File Explorer version. Since I do have it installed on mine, I'm going to check my version, but one way I found (at least on the iOS fire remote app) is that, although the return/back key doesn't work on either the remote or app, selecting the keyboard in the app and tapping the backspace key works. I'm going to try what GFont suggested and report back if it works for me.
Just to follow up my previous post, after uninstalling ES File Explorer version 4.xxx on mine, the back button functionality indeed returned and appeared reliable. I needed ES File Explorer again, so I reinstalled it fully expecting to have to uninstall it after I was done, but so far (knock on wood) the back button has continued to work properly for weeks now. Based on my experience with it, I would say the solution may be as simple as uninstalling/reinstalling ES File Explorer.
