Hi, just swapped a 2nd Gen Fire TV box (all working) to the newest 3rd Get Fire TV and now my soundbar does not recognise Dolby Digital Plus output from the Fire device, despite being Atmos compatible. I get no sound at all unless I revert to Dolby Digital.
I've checked latest updates for both devices, but none available...
According to Fire TV Basic troubleshooting under audio issues, Dolby Digital Plus is supposed to be OFF in your situation (of course, there isn't a separate basic troubleshooting page for the 3rd gen). If it is compatible at this point (make sure if it's mentioned on the product page it's not as a upcoming feature instead of current compatibility), there isn't a help page for it.

I'm also having audio issues with the 3rd Gen Fire TV running through an Onkyo receiver. The receiver shows that it's getting Dolby Digital Plus, but only getting sound from the front left and right speakers. I tried turning Dolby Digital Plus off and just using Dolby Digital and had the same issue. I thought it might have been the app I was using so tried a few like Netflix and HBO Go and still getting the two speaker sound.
I hooked the 2nd Gen Fire TV back to Onkyo receiver and Dolby Digital Plus worked fine on all apps I tried. Sound also works ok running an Xbox One and Roku 3 through the Onkyo receiver.
For everyone having issues: there are a couple more thread in Fire TV>>Fire TV Devices category re audio issues on the 3rd gen. They may or may not be directly related to your* issue, but related enough to at least look at.
If there are no other working suggestions from other customers or from an Amazon moderator, you can contact Amazon customer service either from this or any Amazon page with Help>>Need More Help>>Contact Us or check the Help section from the Fire TV device for Contact Us options. With the phone Contact Us option (automatic when using it from the device not the website Contact Us), Amazon calls almost immediately.
If there is no current fix available, they need to know how wide spread the issue is. So, even if they can't help, make sure it's reported at the very least.

I have exactly the same problem as JohnnyUK. 4K Fire TV arrived today, but no Dolby Digital Plus audio with the Samsung HW-K950 soundbar (note the soundbar supports it, as well as Dolby Atmos). The Fire TV is connected to the HDMI port of the soundbar. Video works fine, just not the audio. Yes, audio works when switching DDP off, but a main point of buying the Fire TV was the advertised DDP and Atmos support (otherwise the Fire TV hasn't much over my 4K Smart TV). That's a major disappointment.
If it helps any Amazon devs reading this, I've also just tried plugging directly (taking the soundbar out of the loop) into my Samsung TV (KS-8000), which also support DD Plus and no sound!
Thought I'd jump in here. I too can confirm the issue. Having the exact same problem with my HW-K950 soundbar. No sound when set to DD+. However, sound does work when set to DD or turned off. My FireTV 2nd gen works perfectly on DD+ with same setup. Hopefully this is something Amazon can address with future updates.
Should I be waiting for a firmware update or sending it back?!?
I've sent mine back. Amazon haven't committed publicly to fixing any of the junk in the FTV3 that needs resolving. The new SoC from AMLogic seems crap so far, frankly.
DenimAce: Having the same problem. This is an excerpt from a review I wrote when I originally received the 3rd Gen Fire TV
" I was running the device through an AV receiver, and found that there are difficulties in sending signals from some of my streaming services through Dolby Pro Logic (that is, those services that are not natively sending an encoded Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus signal) for processing for full use of my surround set up. Only the two front satellites are used. Both the Gen 2 Fire TV and a Roku 4 that I use on occasion have no problems with this issue. Selecting different output modes in the new device does not affect this situation. Having spent all the time I can trying to find a workaround, I reinstalled my Gen 2."
I have since reported this issue to Fire TV techs via a phone conversation yesterday. They committed to respond when they had something, but I haven't heard from them yet. I'm wondering whether I should just return the device, since this functionality is critical.
I am running the fire tv 3rd gen into a Samsung hw-k 950. No joy with Atmos. Netflix is not even showing the logo and the Netflix helpdesk says 'unsupported'. On Amazon prime there are a few movies like gravity that I would need to buy. Do these Amazon movies get the blue light on at the soundbar, which means that it delivers atmos?
It seems that is almost impossible to get any stream with atoms to the Samsung bar.

Thanks, tried that and now have sound, BUT the guidance to the right of that option said that "HDMI is providing stereo quality audio".
I was kinda hoping for DD Plus and Atmos on content that supports it, e.g. Netflix "Okja"....
I stress that DD Plus worked on 2nd Gen Fire TV and my soundbar.....

I'm hoping it's just a software update to fix.

Spot on Mthkrs!
I have just reported it to them via Chat

The only Amazon employees who read the forum are Amazon moderators who just provide basic troubleshooting.
If you want any other Amazon employee or department to see your issue/feedback/report, you need to use the link provided above.

According to the Help pages, the latest firmware is 6.2.1.1
Mine is 6.2.1.0 but unfortunately it is not updating beyond that....
Bump.
