When we got our Kindle Fire 7's a few years ago, both had the Oxford English dictionary preloaded. A few months back I bought my wife a new Kindle Fire 8. We just discovered that that dictionary was not preloaded. What's more, when we tried to download it again from Amazon on her new 8, the website said it was not compatible with our devices. However, it is still on my older Fire 7 and works fine. Is there an issue between the dictionary people and Amazon? Now the only way to download a free Oxford is when you ALSO get something called Office Suite. Finally, is there a free and good dictionary that can be obtained if the previous Oxford dictionary is not available? Thank you!
It may or may not be the dictionary you had before but it still works. I have a new Fire 7 (should be the same OS as the new Fire HD 8) and it has "The New Oxford American Dictionary". It was NOT pre-loaded. I fudged with the storage options to force it to be downloaded to internal storage while all my other books are on external storage. I did similar to CBR's suggestion - I opened a book, tapped on a word, it gave me a short definition and then gave me an option to download the full dictionary for a full definition. I took it and then went back to Storage to reset my download preferences.
