I've mostly used Barnes & Noble Nooks for years, but through a comedy of errors I ended up with a Kindle Fire 7 about a year ago. Got it set up and transferred some of my Amazon music content to it, and downloaded several (mostly free) apps. Used it on and off for the next couple of month and found it a little funky compared to the Nook, but OK. Back about May, I misplaced the fire for a few months, and found it again in July.
Amazingly, the battery hadn't fully run down, and it booted right up, and all my apps were there. So, I gave it a good full charge, and everything worked until about mid August. At that point, virtually every app I tried to run would get as far as the splash screen, and then I'd get a message to this effect:
"Unknown error: you need to update (or download) this app again from Amazon.com."
Ok, except when I would try to download, I would get a message "this app is incompatible with your device." These are all apps, mind you, which ran on the device without issue, for several months.
So, I experimented with deleting an app, then attempting to download and install it again. No go. Going to the app on Amazon would ask me if I wanted to "open" the app (implying that it was still installed, even though I deleted it). Clicking on "open" would get me the message that I needed to download again from Amazon. Attempting to download again would tell me that the app was incompatible with my device.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
So... I went to Amazon's on-line "chat" help. I spent more than an hour on chat, and was bounced through no fewer than six customer service providers. The only things accomplished, were that I got to explain the situation six times, and one guy got me to delete all the app data in "settings", which resulted in all my apps disappearing from the device. He then went to seek "expert help" and was gone for 20 minutes without a peep. I finally gave up and logged out.
Currently, the only apps left on the device were the generics that came with it. I still have Silk, and I can connect to the web and browse to my hearts content. But I can no longer locate in the Amazon shop any of the apps I had installed myself (searches turn up empty), nor do the apps seem to be anywhere that I can recover them. Needless to say, I am reluctant to \purchase\ any new apps, at least until I can get a couple of freebies installed and running consistently again. So far, no luck.
Anybody have any idea what went on here?
Is it worth trying to get this brick working again, or should I just toss it in the bin and go back to my Nook?
also, make sure it's registered to your account, then turn on wireless and sync(menu option or icon) and download from the Apps and Games tab by tapping on All and finding the ones you want to download
What gen is your 7? Go to the apps in question, in the app store, & see when the latest updates were. It could be that updates to those apps have made them no longer compatible with the 7 gen you have & the app page may say what devices are compatible. Also, there wil be info there for contacting the app developer to ask your questions.
