This is an increasingly huge problem for me, and it has now wasted my money.
Since one of the recent updates, my screen will turn itself on at will, and will stay on for two minutes or longer. Usually the screen stays locked, but not always.
Times it does this:
- When plugged in
- When not plugged in
- When turning the volume up or down
- When handling it without touching the buttons
- When it's just sitting there
- Whenever it feels like it
- When I pause a game, turn off the screen, and several minutes later start carrying the tablet somewhere, and the screen comes on and unlocks, so I accidentally press something and all of the sudden I've spent all the coins I bought in the game (using real money) without even knowing the dang screen is on
- Middle of the night when I'm almost asleep, it is not plugged in, but it decides to play nightlight
- When my phone is nearby and it wants to outshine it
- When it's in my bag and decides it wants to see what's there, I don't even know, maybe it wants gum
In other words: the screen is turning itself on, and staying on for a minimum of two minutes, whenever it wants. However, the worst offender is within a couple of minutes of shutting it off. This goes double if it's plugged in.
This is annoying as all, is killing my battery, and has now cost me real life money. I cannot find a fix. (I'm not willing to do a full wipe/reset.) I considered just paying to get rid of the ads and see if that would help, but then it cost me three bucks today, so, no, not gonna do that.
This is repeatable, every day, all day, after multiple reboots, under any circumstance.
According to Reddit, I am *not* the only one having this problem.
Use the HELP link at the bottom of any Amazon page, then NEED MORE HELP...then CONTACT US...and CONTACT US again...select CALL or CHAT. The Call option allows you to input your phone number, and they will call you. Don't use email, and don't Google for a phone number, the results are scam numbers.
If the only likely fix is a reset, you are out of luck if you are not willing to do so.
What you can and should so is add parental controls so you need a PIN to make purchases. Prevents accidents of this sort or even just thumb fingered mis-pressing of keys (I have it on mine for that purpose). I also use one to unlock the device so if someone else gets it they don;t have the free run of my account and credit card.
If it is happening when being carried likely the cover is jiggling enough to turn the device on. Try replacing the cover. And close out of apps you are using, can't spend thing sby accident if nothing is running.
NOTE: I do NOT speak for or represent Amazon in any fashion. This is a customer to customer forum.

Sorry; I wasn't very clear about the money thing. I'd purchased some in-game currency. While moving my tablet, the screen came on (after being off for a bit) and unlocked, which I didn't realize. While in handling it, I hit a button that spent the in-game currency on something useless. It's only a couple of bucks worth, not a big deal in and of itself, but it's kid of the last straw. So it wasn't a cash purchase of game currency; it was a waste of game currency that I'd paid for.
Mostly, I'm just tired of it constantly turning itself on and chewing at my battery, or glowing in the night.
There's also no cover at the moment. I have literally closed all apps, turned off the screen, set the tablet aside--unplugged, no cover, face up, nothing touching it--and within a minute or two it switches the screen back on by itself.
Are there any large or strong magnets around when it happens (wearing any "magnet jewelry" perhaps)? That could be setting off the auto sleep/wake feature.
I agree with the parental controls. Even before I got my girls, I had parental controls just so I wouldn't accidentally purchase stuff with a simple scroll or swipe.
I did have one fire, about 5 years ago that kind of did the same thing. It was sitting on my nightstand (nothing else on or near it) and I was woken up by "voices (which is never a good thing). Found out, my Fire was on, had managed to open to videos, purchased a video and started playing (I was completely alone in the house at the time, so, it wasn't anyone else).
Amazon customer service kindly understood and believed my weird story and refunded the video (I have since added a Video PIN, as well). Never happened again. I just attributed it to "ghost in the machine" and went on with life.
Did anyone ever figure out why this happens? Mine has been doing this too It turns on in the middle of the night and drains the battery until I wake up and turn it off. It also often occurs right after I put it to sleep and go to put it on the shelf. Without touching any buttons, it turns back on. I don't get it. Is it spying on me? I just want it to stop doing this.
Same here... It's my toddlers kids tablet that doesn't have purchasing or background apps even enabled. Yet it's been doing this for over a year. And no, system wipes/factory resets do not work. I've tried multiple times... This is plain dumb
did yu cehck to see what apps are running? I had a weather app that kept updating itself and a solitaire game that I had to make sure and go to the Home page of the app or it kept Running (ditto for one Angry Birds game)
