If you go to the Alexa app hamburger menu and set up a timer, reminder, or alarm for an echo device, you still can't have it play a song or playlist.
Shocking. Instead, we got… celebrities. Ugh…
Such an obvious and fundamental feature that has been missing for so many years. For an alarm, waking up to music or a radio station is pretty obvious. For a reminder, playing a particular song can remind you to do something in particular, like pick up the kid from daycare. A timer could also be fun to play with and have “kitchen” timers be food themed songs, etc. But apparently, the Amazon development team leadership is not getting this potential at all.
Let alone the simple practical nature of a daily wake up to your favorite music. Music producers and artists should be up in arms about this too. All that revenue they are not getting over very poor work by Amazon on implementing such a desired and obvious feature. It should be as simple as choosing a playlist or song under the add alarm page either as one of the Sound options or; as a fifth line on this page “Music” where you could link to Spotify or other music service along with Amazon Music or your Prime account. You bet your pants I have told Amazon many times about it but, more of us need to complain about this missing and pretty obviously needed feature! Amazon will only sell more devices. Otherwise, if anyone asks “Should I get an Echo?” My reply will remain “Not if you want to wake up to music you pay for using your voice or the Alexa app.” Caveat: if the music industry lawyers are to blame for this: then we are all royally screwed for music alarms on Echo devices. Second Caveat: Yes, I know about routines but, it is overly complicated to implement and lacks the ease and simplicity of just making an alarm for one time or repeating. Also, I have never been able to figure it out. It is that bad a UX design. Thirdly, I don't want a routine. I just want an alarm that is music I choose from (in my case) Spotify. That simple.
You can set alarm to music. Since 2017. First to use spotify you have to have the paid spotify acct. Spotify should be your default music service. The free doesn't work the last i knew. You have to set the music alarm by voice.
Alexa, wake me up to Carly Rae Jepsen at 7am.
Alexa, wake me up at 7am with my “wake up” playlist.
Alexa, wake me up to “Thank U Next” by Ariana Grande every weekday at 7am.
The reminders tell you what the reminder is for and i would prefer that than to remember what song goes with what reminder. as far as kitchen timer you can have it tell you if the meat is done or the potatoes etc. I also prefer that.
Thinker were you able to wake up to music today? I was thinking that the reminders are so useless because they only tell you 2x at a low volume. So maybe instead of setting a reminder i could set an alarm with perhaps an appropriate song to make me think of what i need to do. Every month i have to give the dog hearworm/flea meds. so maybe set up an alarm with who let the dogs out....

So in other words you knew that you could wake to music--you just don't want to use voice to do it. You would prefer to use the app. I am the opposite. I hate to touch the alexa app because i got the echo to use voice. That is why i haven't set up guard yet. I thought i had to use the app--except just now I ask the echo to set up guard and alexa said she would walk me through it. This is great. Probably faster to go through the app though.
not so great alexa had me go into the app after all.
