What do you want to hear? is some kind of new thing that either Amazon or TuneIn or both did to the default station you used to listen to. In the case of your local NPR station, let's call it WXYZ for this discussion and, apparently MSNBC, if you say, “Alexa, play WXYZ” or “Alexa, play MSNBC” (if that was your main station) you now only get “What do you want to hear?” in reply. Not the station. To get the old station you used to listen to, in the case of WXYZ, you have to say “Alexa, play NPR” and, voilà!, your old WXYZ NPR station seems to be back. So, if you are a “What do you want to hear?” victim, please post the trick to getting your station back if it is MIA. In the mean time, we all should beg Amazon to go back. This was a bad move and very confusing. Especially if you live in a multi NPR station area, like I do… I sit nearly equidistant from both station's towers. If I am listening to one for a local show or local news, I ask for it. The other, being from a university, is more arts and political news oriented, I ask for it. Now it is suddenly not easy if I forget, was that station A or station B? Which is the one Amazon/TuneIn has deemed “my station”? I'd pick both so… Just stick with call letters for voice. It worked fine. No automation… unless we specifically want it and set it in the Alexa app/page.
Couldn't agree more--this is a horrible development with Alexa if it's intended (and not just a bug). It will actually be enough to drive me to try and find a different voice activated way of playing radio. Why they are not letting us call out station numbers any more is beyond me--and what makes it worse is that it just keeps asking "What do you want to hear?" And then when I try to say "off" it just gives me some random awful station that I don't want to hear. I hope this gets fixed quickly--the change occurred around last Saturday (March 9, 2019)...and trying to listen to the radio on Alexa hasn't been the same since. I can still get to the station by lining it up on my queue with the phone--and then if I tell it to "Play Tunein" it will get me the last station I listened to. But then I can't switch stations without having the phone out...and that is *not* why I use Alexa. Again, I can't say how much I hope they fix this immediately and go back to how they had it.
Thinker = Glad to hear yours works now, but it still won't play the station I'm asking for. For what it's worth, I'm trying to get WGTD HD-2. When I ask it to play that, all I get is the abominable and continually repeating "What do you want to hear?" And then when I tell it to "stop" or "off," it then plays me a different random station.
I will try sending them feedback again--hope this is just a bug they can fix, and not some new normal.
