Before you get started with Echo Sub, set up the other supported Echo device on your Amazon account and verify that is "online" in the Alexa app. Next, place your Echo Sub on the floor in the same room as your Echo devices. Tip: Before setup, check that you have the latest version of the Alexa app in your device's app store
To set up Echo Sub in the Alexa app:
Select Devices, and then the icon.
Select Add Device.
Select Amazon Echo, and then Echo Sub.
Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to Wi-Fi and complete setup.
Tip: If you’re trying to add your Echo Sub to an existing speaker set, delete the speaker set first. To learn more, go to Set Up Echo Speakers For Stereo Sound.
Note: Echo Sub only supports music content. Alexa doesn’t process your requests because Echo Sub has no microphones.
We want you to know:
Echo Sub must be paired with a compatible Echo device. Echo Sub is optimized for Echo (2nd Gen) and Echo Plus (2nd Gen). Currently, Echo Sub only supports music playback over your wireless network, and does not support Bluetooth, 3.5mm AUX in, or TV/video. Some Echo devices support different stereo and subwoofer configurations.
How to set up speakers for Stereo sound
For stereo sound, pair two supported Echo devices of the same model to create a speaker set. One Echo device plays sound on the right channel (right side), while the other plays sound on the left channel (left side). For richer bass, you can pair Echo Sub to supported Echo devices. Note: Paired Echo speakers only support music content. Line-out and Bluetooth connections to external speakers aren't recommended.
To get started, download the latest version of the Alexa app and check that your Echo devices also have the latest software update. For more information, go to Alexa Device Software Updates.
To create a speaker set:
Place your devices in the same room, several ft (1 m) apart from each other.
Note: If you’re using Echo Sub, place it on the floor in the same room as the other speakers.
In the Alexa app, select the Devices icon, and then the icon.
Select Add Stereo Pair / Subwoofer.
Select Speaker Sets, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
For the best stereo sound separation, what is the recommended distance range between the Echo 2 speakers? It is usually outlined as something like 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) for bookshelf and small speakers.
Is the one meter separation (3.28 feet) mentioned in the animation the minimum distance, ideal distance, or maximum distance (I doubt that for max but, just in case since they are tiny speakers)?
Also, what is the recommended placement height and distance to walls and/or corners?
Generally speaking, with bookshelf speakers, usually the speaker at ear height or slightly lower when sitting, is best height plus placing them some distance from the wall, at least a few feet, is best. Speakers in corners are OK if you want more bass. Less, move from corners. (Never put small speakers or “bookshelf” speakers on or in a bookshelf!)
But Echos are not normal speakers — they face down and project outward around the speaker. Some of these basic placements may not apply or may be different also since they were designed to sit on tables or counters from low coffee table to bar height range.
Add to above the new stereo pairing and, maybe some things also change because of the pairing versus a lone Echo on a console in the corner…
Is it possible to add an Echo dot (2nd Gen) and an Echo dot (3rd Gen) in stereo set mode? I have an echo dot (2nd gen) and an echo dot (3rd gen). I am trying to pair them together in the stereo set mode, but I am unable to do so as I get an error message in the "Add Stereo Pair" settings saying "No compatible speakers found, please set up other speakers before creating your speaker set".

Hi Vivek,
Welcome to the forum! To set up a stereo pair, the Echos need to be of the same model and generation, compatible devices are the 2. Gen Echo, 3rd Gen Dot and 1st & 2nd Gen Plus.
Hi, I’ve set up 2 echo plus in a stereo pair and plug in one of them an audio jack cable from the tv, but I can here the sound only in this echo plus and not in the other. Am I missing something?
The biggest flaw with the stereo setup is that you have to upgrade your amazon music subscription from £3.99 single device to multiple devices. Even though you are using just one Alexa to play music and the other for a stereo channel.
This seems absurd to me.
Also you need to disable the echo so only one in the room responds when you ask things (change the wake word) otherwise it gets confusing - set an tuner in one echo and when you ask how long is left, the other replies with “there are no timers set”
another issue is that if you tell Alexa to stop the track sometimes only one echo stops, the other carries on playing.
i spent all weekend trying to get Amazon music to work, and 2 hours on the phone to support, before they discovered the multiple devices / single device subscription issues. It’s all new to them too.
So i have two gen 2 Echos set up for stereo, and they work great for playing music. I was experimenting with using them as bluetooth speakers for my computer, but when i connected only one Echo played the sound. How do i set it up so they still do stereo over bluetooth?
Do you guys plan on adding stereo pairing the first Jen echoes it’s really messed up that they can play the exact same song at the exact same time but you can’t split left and right channel? I know the devices Can connect to each other through Bluetooth so you could Bluetooth one of the channels over or you can just separate it initially through the Wi-Fi and just send one signal to One and One to the other.

Hi Armrizz,
Welcome to the forum! Stereo pairs can only stream music, when you plug one of them into an audio source, only that one Echo will put out sound.

Hello Tevett,
In short, you can't. As mentioned above, currently stereo pairs can only play music streamed from Amazon Music, TuneIn etc.

Hey Nate,
Whether or not stereo pairing will be available for earlier generations of Echos I don't know, and if you were to connect them via Bluetooth, you'd get dual mono instead of stereo sound.
I hope this helps, if you have more questions feel free to ask!

Are you able to expand on the 'currently' and the 'etc' parts of that please Gabriel? I.e. roughly when might we expect to see other skills be able to work with stereo pairs / subs, and is there a current list of everything apart from Amazon Music and TuneIn that does?

Hi Darth Andy,
I sure can, you should be able to play music with the sub as long as it Alexa can stream it, so aside from AM and TuneIn, Spotify and iHeartRadio should also work. As for compatibility as computer / TV speakers, whether or not that feature will be available in the future I don't know, as we speak, speaker pairs with the Sub only support music streamed through Alexa.
I hope that answers your question, let me know if there are more!
Hi I'm having a really hard time setting up my Echo Sub as a stereo pair with my Echo. It keeps saying Connectivity Error. I have really fast internet and everything is in the same room? Any suggestions?

Did you do as advised, by the Moderator, in your previous post?
I did, they were actually previously connected and worked perfectly. I walked in one day and the only thing that would play music was the sub so all you got was bass, the Echo wasn't working at all. I tried resetting the Echo and unpairing them as a speaker set now the Echo is the only thing that will play music. I tried pairing them again in the Speaker section of the App and now it just says "Connectivity Error." I have scanned and re-scanned probably 25 times a day for over a week. It just flat won't work. All the devices show up in the App as being Online. I'm about to send the Sub back unfortunately, that's my only option at this point.

By "resetting", do you mean restarting them by unplugging or just de-registering in the app? If possible, try a different network to see if the issue remains.

Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a sub. Can I pair it with a single echo plus or will it only work with two stereo paired devices?
Sorry, I'm new to this. LOL
Jim
Hi Jim,
no worries, this is a safe place to ask questions! Also yes, you can pair the sub with a single Echo Plus, check out this link for more info.
