The Echo devices are two way speakers which you connect to your home’s WiFi, allowing them to communicate with Amazon’s servers (the brains). The voice you hear is called Alexa i.e. a digital assistant. You download the Amazon Alexa app to your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet to set up the devices and customize your Alexa experience.
Hi. I don't know a thing about Alexa or the Dot, but am intrigued by what they offer.
What I cannot understand from the description is if the Dot is standalone, or does it work off of an Alexa?
TY for your kindness and feedback!
I just want to add to expand on everything already mentioned. Echo is the device (hardware) Alexa is the Digital Assistant (software). So they come together. You can't have the device without the software or the software without the device. The Echo device is a Speaker with Microphones built in. You can speak to it and it will respond to your voice. It is a standalone device. You do not need to buy more than one to get this to work. However, if you want Multi Room functionality buying more than one makes sense.
Here are the things you must have for the Echo device to work:
A Wireless network in your home i.e. WiFi. (without a constant connection to the internet this device is useless).
You will need an electrical power outlet to plug this device into. It must have power to work it is not a battery operated device (unless you buy the Amazon TAP it is the only battery operated device in the line up).
You must have a device on which you can download and access the Alexa App for set up. Either a Smartphone, Tablet or a Computer. If you don't have a smartphone nor a tablet you can access the Alexa App via the web on a computer at https://alexa.amazon.com.
You must have an Amazon Account (free). If you have a Amazon Prime Account (paid annual subscription) even better because you get more music and other things included.
My suggestion is start small. Try the Echo Dot to see if you like it. No matter which device you get they all work the same except for the TAP and Echo Show. The TAP as I already said is the battery operated version and can be moved about but you must charge it. The Echo Show has a screen which means you can do a bit more with the Show than with the other devices. The Echo Dot is the cheapest of all the devices with the Echo Show being the most expensive out of the line up.
