I have pretty much the same issue. Mine will work for weeks or even months but I've noticed starting this summer (after ~6 months of ownership) it would stop responding and the blue lights would just dance around. They always dance around when I talk but it doesn't do anything. I have to unplug it and then plug back in and it works again.
I bought mine less than a year ago and it is still under warranty but it sounds like that means nothing. Pretty crappy company to just make a device and not really support it.
I have a 2nd Gen Echo Dot and this has been a recurring BUG since I got it! Most often it happens after Echo was connected to a paired BT speaker (and by the way, the thing does this WITHOUT me asking to first, which even Amazonie's Tech Support has said shouldn't happen!). Anyway, after I tell Echo Dot to Disconnect from the Bluetooth speaker (and the speaker acknowledges) there is NO SOUND NOW from the Echo Dot internal speaker. Now recently, the Echo Dot loses it's speaker sound without ANY BT Speaker on anywhere in the house! This has been going on for 2 years, I've reported it REPEATEDLY to Amazon and they DO NOTHING! I've been in IT for 32 years, I know a Firmware bug when I see (or don't hear it) and this is a BUG! Now even with 4 total resets within 2hours the Dot is permanently DUMB (no sound) and I've had it with Amazon taking your money and leaving you with useless garbage! So I tell everyone I know that's thinking of buying ANY Amazonie Echo / Alexis product about all the issues I've had and to NOT BUY ANY MODEL of them. I also post on every website I run across this same story to warn others. In the last year I've talked at least 50 people to NOT buy any Echo. Maybe that's part of the reason Amazonie's stock has tanked 22% so far in 2018 ....... I hope so!
Suddenly had the same issue yesterday with our first Gen Echo. Unplugged and plugged back in. It worked fine until today. I tried to add to the grocery list. You could tell Echo was working on it, but no voice. I checked the grocery list and the item had been added. I then had Echo set a two minute timer. I monitored the timer from the app and when it expired the light rings went off but no voice. Echo responded to my STOP command. I did nothing further. About an hour later, Echo was responding. Reading through this thread, I guess there's no solution :-(
Same. Echo dot not working. I know it hears me, because it does the same blue dance when I say something, but no sound. None of the resets have worked for me, even temporarily. For a while it would work sometimes and not sometimes kind of randomly, but not just no sound. Should have gone with Google.
I was having the same issue with one of my Echo Spots. It just started happening and then I realized this all started happening when I was messing around with my bluetooth speaker that I paired with my PC. Someone had mentioned checking out which Bluetooth devices were being paired with my echo so I went in to the app and found that it was also trying to pair with my external speaker. I turned this off in the app and it's now working just great. Check you Alexa app to make sure no bluetooth devices are trying to connect.
I just found this site, and I have the same issue on Gen 1 echo. Nothing worked and customer service just offered me 15% off a new one..acted like it was only my issue, no one else. I wish there was more advanced troubleshooting instead of a hard reset.
I have the same problem. I have one other 1st gen and two 2nd gen that work fine. I hear the pop that others describe. After that, I get nothing. Sometimes the pop happens when it is booting up. Sometimes it takes a day or two.
I too am having the very same problem. I have a black gen 1 Echo. Like others I hear a pop and then even though the blue light ring is going around I have no sound. I have tried resetting it, unplugging it and then it works for anywhere from a few hours to even less then one hour. I have a black gen 1 echo dot that works just fine. With so many people having the same issue I believe there has to be an issue that Amazon evidently has no idea how to fix. I love my Echo when it is working right but no way can I recommend this device to anyone until the problem can be solved.
So my 2nd gen just did this today. I heard cracking and stuttering when getting a reply from Alexa 20mn later it just died. The ring is responding even the activity tab on the app shows its hearing me but I'm not getting a response. Also reset the device but same result...what's the best solution so far if any ?
This just happened to my daughter with her Echo Dot 3rd gen. We tried everything to get audio to work. I ended up resetting it via the Alexa App on my iPhone and once I had re-configured it on my wifi I discovered that it had a Bluetooth pairing with some speakers. When I removed the Bluetooth pairing the Echo Dot worked again. My suggestion: try saying "Alexa turn off bluetooth" and see if that works.
So this does seem Bluetooth related, I've got 2 Gen 1 Echos and 1 is doing this though has never been paired to a Bluetooth device has started loosing it's voice but still recognising voice commands so I've tried everything recommended in this post so finally tries while not speaking to connect a Bluetooth speaker but just spends forever scanning, so after reconnecting the power (I've found leaving it off for 30mins or so will work for about 24 hours with no issues or hard resetting) I paired a Bluetooth speaker and then promptly disconnected it and it's worked for 24 hours again and lost it's voice, turning on the Bluetooth speaker makes the speaker automatically connect to the echo (which I thought you had to ask it to connect to Bluetooth) and then you can hear it though the speaker fine, giving a disconnect command, disconnects and the speaker makes it's noise but the echo will not use it's on built in speaker without a restart. Any more ideas (my gen 1 plus, gen 2 echos and dots and gen 3 dot does not have this issue)
i have the same issue, i have reported to customer service, they don't know and they don't care about this, they just keep saying give me big discount to buy a new one, i don't care about discount, i could just buy a new Google home.
at last, i told them i don't need money, i don't need replacement, i just want to send the garbage to them so they can research it and post a solution to Help Menu as i can see a lot of users are facing the same issue without any solution, users can't find any help in the Help Menu,
I told them i don't need they sent the fixed device back to me as i don't like this anymore i need a new Google home,
I give my email address to them, no response so far. disappoint, shame on Amazon.
Had the same problem. Turns out I said "correct" and echo device took this to mean "connect". It connected with the nearest Bluetooth device (my phone, with media muted) and appeared to be playing normally. Simple fix - disconnect Bluetooth connection on phone and echo performs fine. (Obvs works with nearby Bluetooth devices too) Avoid saying "correct" "collect" "connect" or any variants 😀
