Generally, no. You should look at the details of the lights or coffee pot (or any other device) you're considering using for the smart home. Most of these devices rely on basic Internet connectivity (and an app) to be controlled remotely. Alexa has some built in skills that you can enable to control these types of devices which will work on any Echo device.
There are also devices like Samsung Smartthings, some Phillips smart bulbs, and some smart locks that do in fact require a smart home hub of some sort (which those manufacturers will sell to work with those devices). For these you may consider getting an Echo Plus which can remove the need for these extra smart hubs.
